Energy bankers Muhammad Laghari and Alexander Burpee also join as Managing Directors

Moelis (NYSE: MC), a leading global independent investment bank, today announced that it has appointed Stephen Trauber as Chairman and Global Head of Energy and Clean Technology.  Based in Houston, Steve will lead the Firm’s global efforts in this space, building on the strength of its U.S. Energy business, led by David Cunningham, and its deep expertise across the Middle East and Europe.  His arrival further expands the Firm’s offerings and relationships across energy services, upstream, midstream and energy infrastructure, electrification, mobility, sustainability, LNG and natural gas, among other sub-sectors.

With over 35 years of experience, Steve has advised on more than $700 billion of energy transactions, including many of the sector’s most significant and transformative M&A and financing transactions. In addition to assembling more than 300 oil and natural gas transactions, he has also served as lead financier for many of the industry’s IPOs and equity and debt capital markets deals. Steve most recently served as Vice Chairman and Global Co-Head of Natural Resources and Clean Energy Transition at Citi, where he was responsible for creating and building its Clean Energy Transition business. Prior to Citi, Steve was Vice Chairman and Global Head of Energy at UBS Investment Bank, where he worked with Ken Moelis.

Effective March 4, senior energy bankers Muhammad Laghari and Alexander Burpee will also join as Managing Directors in Houston to provide strategic advice and execution expertise to upstream and midstream oil and gas clients.  Muhammad and Alex each bring over 15 years of energy experience to Moelis and join from Guggenheim where they were Senior Managing Directors in the Energy Investment Banking group. Previously, Muhammad and Alex were part of Citi’s Energy Investment Banking team, then led by Steve Trauber, where Muhammad served as Head of North America Upstream Investment Banking and Alex helped lead a technical A&D team providing strategic advice and deal execution expertise to clients. Before a career in investment banking, Alex held technical roles in exploration and production with Schlumberger and Hess.

Navid Mahmoodzadegan, Co-Founder and Co-President at Moelis commented, “Steve is a recognized leader in the industry who has played a key role in many of the energy sector’s landmark transactions. We are thrilled to have him lead our global Energy & Clean Technology franchise and look forward to working with Muhammad and Alex as we continue to provide critical advice to our clients across this rapidly evolving industry.”

Ken Moelis, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Moelis added, “We continue to strengthen our business across key sectors to enhance the innovative advice and solutions we provide our clients. I look forward to reuniting with Steve and know that our established global energy franchise and our dedicated Clean Technology effort will greatly benefit from his deep experience building teams that foster growth. Investing in our Energy efforts and delivering our expanded expertise to clients around the world remains a key strategic focus at Moelis.”

“I am excited to join Moelis to help grow its global Energy and Clean Technology business and rejoin Ken and many of my former colleagues,” said Steve. “I am also delighted to partner with David Cunningham whom I have known for many years. The global energy ecosystem is undergoing major consolidation and change. I look forward to actively participating in its strategic evolution and working with so many of our clients that are evaluating how best to create value during this period of transformation.”

These hires follow the Firm’s September 2023 announcement of the launch of its Clean Technology Group with a dedicated focus on Energy Transition and sustainability, and appointments of Arash Nazhad and Rick Polhemus to co-lead the group.

Moelis & Company and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania today announced a new leadership program targeting Moelis’ mid-level and recently promoted bankers. Moelis & Company is a leading global independent investment bank that provides strategic advice and solutions to corporations, governments and financial sponsors.

The Moelis@Wharton: Leadership Development Program will host its inaugural session July 24-26 on Wharton’s Philadelphia campus. The program also features experiential learning exercises as well as individualized coaching sessions. At the conclusion of the three-day program, participants will have an individualized leadership action plan tailored to their specific roles at the firm.

Wharton Executive Education worked closely with Moelis & Company’s learning and executive leaders to develop the custom program.

Moelis & Company Wins IFR Magazine’s Restructuring Adviser of the Year 2019

London & New York , December 18, 2019

Moelis & Company (NYSE: MC), a leading global independent investment bank, has been awarded IFR Magazine’s coveted Restructuring Adviser of the Year award for 2019 for delivering clients ‘one firm’ across the globe.

IFR judges said: “Moelis prides itself on a ‘one firm’ approach to restructurings, being able to offer the same service to clients from Europe to the US to Asia. That approach proved highly useful in the past year as complex cross-border restructurings, fueled by years of cheap debt, became marquee assignments.”

With approximately 60 per cent of assignments completed out-of-court, Moelis advised on 9 of the 10 largest restructuring assignments in 2019 globally, helping to place it top of the Refinitiv Worldwide Global Restructuring league table 2019 year-to-date.

The IFR judges said Moelis ‘…proved to be a tenacious advocate for its client and continues to stretch the boundaries of what’s possible in a restructuring.” Bill Derrough and Thane Carlston, Co-Heads of Moelis & Company’s Restructuring Team, said: “Since our team joined Moelis in 2008, we have worked on more than $1 trillion of restructuring transactions. In winning this award, we are proud to have been recognized for the work we have done in the past year for clients like iHeart, Noble, Hexion and Neiman Marcus.”

The IFR judges also pointed to Steinhoff as a major highlight of the recent debt restructuring market. Matt Prest and Charles Noel-Johnson, Co-Heads of EMEA Restructuring, said: “Moelis was there at the critical stage at the start and helped save the company from bankruptcy in the first three months. For a year and a half, we worked on all aspects of the deal and ultimately delivered.”

New York, January 28, 2021

Moelis & Company (NYSE: MC), a leading global independent investment bank, today announced the appointment of Rodney Reid as a Managing Director and Global Head of Private Funds Advisory based in New York. He joins the firm in April.

Under Mr. Reid’s leadership, Private Funds Advisory will bring together the Firm’s existing capabilities in providing private capital alternatives to financial sponsors ranging from accessing primary capital for new funds and investments to bespoke, private capital solutions for existing portfolio companies and funds. The Private Funds Advisory team will work in close collaboration with the Firm’s financial sponsors advisory bankers globally to further enhance the full suite of services for its critical private equity client base.

Navid Mahmoodzadegan, Co-President of Moelis & Company, said: “Over the past few years we have seen an exponential expansion of capital available for alternative assets, creating more avenues for financial sponsors to access diverse capital sources for new and existing funds and, increasingly, a breadth of capital for portfolio companies beyond traditional IPOs or strategic asset sale exits.  The integration of our fundraising and secondary advisory businesses under Rodney’s leadership, combined with the Firm’s leading financial sponsor and M&A capabilities, positions us to deliver a range of strategic, customized solutions to our clients across the entire private equity lifecycle.”

Mr. Reid joins Moelis & Company with more than 20 years of financial services experience. He was most recently a Senior Managing Director in the Private Capital Advisory team at Evercore in New York. Moelis & Company Announces the Appointments of Arek Kurkciyan and Dennis Crandall as Managing Directors, Expanding the Firm’s Healthcare Franchise

New York, October 18, 2022

Moelis & Company today announced the appointments of Arek Kurkciyan and Dennis Crandall as Managing Directors providing strategic and financial advice to clients in the life sciences and outsourced pharmaceutical services sectors. Based in New York, they will join Moelis & Company’s growing healthcare team on November 22, 2022.

Arek and Dennis bring extensive investment banking experience, having helped clients respond to some of the most significant shifts in the pharmaceutical landscape.  These include a particular focus on mergers and acquisitions that facilitate the convergence of the life sciences and outsourced pharmaceutical services industries, as well as the rise of new technologies that fuel the development of cutting-edge therapies.

Arek joins from Morgan Stanley where most recently he was a Managing Director in the Healthcare Investment Banking group. Previously he held investment banking roles at Deutsche Bank, and he began his career with various roles in the pharmaceutical industry at GlaxoSmithKline and Novartis.

Dennis was previously a Managing Director at Morgan Stanley in the Healthcare Investment Banking group. Prior to that, he worked on the M&A team at UBS Investment Bank. Earlier in his career, he held various roles at KPMG and was an investment analyst at Jacobsen Capital Management.

“The explosion of innovation in biologics, including cell and gene therapies, represents a significant source of growth for both corporates and sponsors in the life sciences sector and beyond.  Robust continued investment in expanding R&D and production expertise should continue to drive M&A activity and reshape the healthcare landscape,” said Jeff Raich, Co-President of Moelis & Company. “Arek and Dennis bring strong relationships with both large-cap corporates and private equity investors that are core to our Firm’s strategy.  Their addition to our collaborative platform expands the high quality, bespoke advice we can offer not only our healthcare clients, but also those across a diverse range of industries with a broad and strategic interest in the life sciences.”
